Criterion 1: Documentation for Meaning or Intended Meaning of the String

An applicant seeking one or more allocatable variant strings that do not match a word in a dictionary but that represent a word that is included in a dictionary should provide the following information during the application process:

  • The language in which the variant string is an intended word.
  • The intended word that the variant string represents in that language.
  • Which writing convention(s) in the language/script allow the intended language users to reasonably determine that the non-dictionary string represents the identified intended dictionary word (e.g., an abbreviation).
  • The reference of a contemporary dictionary in that language which contains the corresponding intended word (including name of the dictionary, year of publication, publisher name and address, edition of the dictionary, and/or its URL).
  • The entry in the dictionary for the intended dictionary word with its meaning. The entry should identify the intended word and the relevant meaning as contemporary and general purpose, not as historical or specialized purpose.
