Direct contention occurs when two or more strings are identical to, variants of, or otherwise determined to be similar to each other. Indirect contention occurs when two strings are not in direct contention with each other, but are both in contention with at least one other string. In some cases, applications in indirect contention with each other may proceed if they are not in contention with the final winning string following the resolution of the relevant contention set.
